Collection comprises literary manuscripts and mock-ups for five books written or illustrated by Charles Michael Daugherty, an American author and illustrator of children's books, from 1950 to 1971. Much of the collection concerns two works, Samuel Clemens and The great archaeologists. Collection also includes two folders of correspondence.

James Daugherty (1889-1974) was born in Asheville, North Carolina and attended the Corcoran School of Art, Washington, D.C. He also spent two years in London studying under Frank Brangwyn. He was originally a muralist and his work hangs in the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney and the Smithsonian. He also worked on theater sets, illustrated fiction books, and became a children's book author and illustrator.
